Aiways offers unrivalled battery safety

20.10.2021: • Shanghai-based EV brand achieves ‘zero battery fire’ record since 2019 • Patented ‘sandwich’ technology negates risk of coolant leakage • Effcient battery packaging increases interior comfort and wellbeing

•    Shanghai-based EV brand achieves ‘zero battery fire’ record since 2019

•    Patented ‘sandwich’ technology negates risk of coolant leakage

•    Effcient battery packaging increases interior comfort and wellbeing

•    Aiways working together with CATL on new battery technologies

Shanghai-based Aiways is increasing its focus on electric vehicle safety by committing to maintain its industry-best ‘zero battery fire’ record.

Since Aiways started vehicle deliveries to customers in 2019, not a single one of its U5 all-electric SUVs has experienced a battery fire as a result of a collision in any of its markets, including China and Europe. The company is now investing to uphold this zero battery-fire record, as more U5 SUVs are sold globally across existing and new markets, and following the arrival of the new Aiways U6 in early 2022.

Dr. Xiaojie Gao, VP of Powertrain Department at Aiways commented:
“As a new EV brand we’re very proud of our ‘zero fire’ safety record, and it’s something we’re committed to maintain indefinitely – especially as more of our vehicles are sold globally. We have developed some of the safest battery tech available in an electric vehicle today, and expect to make more advances to improve battery safety, performance and efficiency in the future.”

Aiways holds more than 10 patents on the ‘sandwich’ structure battery pack, which both improves vehicle stability and significantly reduces the risk of battery safety incidents. By separating the dry and wet areas of the cell, the company has negated the risk of coolant leakage.

Aiways’ world-first sandwich structure battery features an isolation plate between the battery module and the cooling plate, making it impossible for leaking coolant to enter the module, even after a substantial impact. The structure also provides partial insulation, reducing the rate of heat transfer between the external environment and the battery module.

During development, the Aiways sandwich battery pack underwent 580 rigorous tests, far more than the 51 tests required by the Chinese national standard. To ensure the safety and reliability of the battery pack, tests have covered electrical, chemical and physical elements, including short-circuit tests, extreme heat and frost tests and starting the battery at high and low temperatures.

With a capacity of 63kWh, the battery unit in the Aiways U5 SUV is capable of delivering enough charge to cover more than 400km on a single charge (WLTP). For the ultimate convenience, the U5 SUV’s battery can be rapid-charged from 30% to 80% in just 27 minutes using a DC charger.

The battery pack is comprised of 24 high energy density modules supplied by CATL, and the two companies are working together to develop new battery technologies.

Thanks to space-saving EV architecture and the flat battery pack, the Aiways U5 not only offers a class-leading space for occupants to travel in peace and comfort, but a trunk capacity of 432 liters (VDA) with seats up and 1555 liters with seats folded.
