this game-changing electric food delivery box technology helps revolutionize last-mile food delivery, keeping food hot or cold while traveling from the food service provider to the consumer

CAKE, the Swedish leader in premium electric off-road motorbikes, announced today a partnership with mobile living experts, Dometic, to bring to market The Dometic Food Delivery Box. This purpose-built, temperature-controlled electric-powered box is designed specifically for use with CAKE’s Ösa model to keep meals hot or cool during the ‘last-mile’ of food delivery. Additional product specifications will be available in April, with the product set to launch in September 2021.
The Dometic Food Delivery Box connects directly to the DC battery of the Ösa model via an electric cord and uses the same battery that operates the motorcycle. It has separate compartments and dedicated temperature zones with both heating and cooling elements that will keep food warm or cold while en route to the customer. The box also boasts connectivity features that enable the operator to monitor that the correct food temperature is maintained, and the food has not been tampered with during transport.
Furthermore, the delivery box has electrostatic air purification (ionization), which keeps the atmosphere inside the box clean while also protecting food from odors of previous deliveries. The CAKE Ösa battery will run the vehicle and the food storage compartments for 3-4 hours of continuous driving. And, if there is an extra battery on charge, the Ösa becomes a 24-hour delivery solution.
"This is a wonderful example on how ambition, the strive and obligation for quality and end-customer satisfaction, come together, driven by the need for improvement, know-how, peak technology and the need for new means of efficient and clean transportation," commented Stefan Ytterborn, founder and CEO of CAKE
The trend to order food from restaurants has been growing steadily, boosted by new digital services and more delivery options, but, above all, by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2017 and 2020, sales for food deliveries have increased by 60 percent globally, and by 2024, the figures from 2017 are expected to more than double. (Source Statista, September 2020)
As the demand for food delivery services has increased due to changing business models, consumer preferences, and social distancing, so has the frustration among many who use these food delivery services. Consumers experience extended wait times as well as cold, shaken food.
Seeing an opportunity, Dometic and CAKE dug in to solve the problem, collaborating on the electric food delivery box to bring food delivery to a whole new level. Dometic and CAKE’s delivery box focuses on maintaining the prepared food quality, ensuring temperature consistency, and controlling the food environment. Additionally, by utilizing a solution that works with Ösa, the goal has been to increase the efficiency and shorten the time it takes to deliver to the end consumer.
Throughout the development process, two additional collaboration partners have been instrumental in providing real-world design feedback. One is Favo, a high-end last-mile delivery service in Sweden, which maintains control of their entire food production and delivery process from order taking through cooking and delivery.
The other partner is Bar Agrikultur, a BiB Gormand Michelin restaurant at Nytorget in Stockholm, which has provided invaluable input into how such a delivery box could maintain their food deliveries’ integrity.
Commenting on the project, founder and CEO of Favo, Oscar Johansson, commented: “It’s really great how we can increase our efficiency by more than 50%, by using a scooter versus a 4-wheeler, getting stuck in traffic and not needing to find a parking space at the door of the customer. Simultaneously, securing temperature and food quality through the Dometic coolers and heaters is a game-changer. A happy customer is the only thing that counts to us.”
Joel Åhlin, the co-founder of Agrikultur and Bar Agrikultur, added: “Honoring food, flavor, sustainability and the local community is our top priority and using an electric, non-polluting and silent utility transportation-wonder like the Ösa with temperature-controlled containers from Dometic...it’s the only reason why we will accept doing food delivery.”
With Dometic’s years of experience in mobile and environmentally controlled food storage and CAKE’s expertise in developing clean, quiet, and robust electric motorcycles, there couldn’t be a better team to partner up to create this food delivery box. It is a solution for anyone needing to carry out fast and efficient deliveries in nearly any environment in the world.
“Restaurants and consumers all over the world demand quality and innovative solutions in the snowballing food delivery market. Imagine if meals could be delivered home in a way that they get to your table in restaurant quality? Instead of cold meals, it would be like you were sitting in the restaurant yourself enjoying the meal the way the chef wanted you to.
That will satisfy restaurants, delivery companies, and consumers. Dometic has a head start with its expertise in temperature-sensitive solutions. And, together with CAKE, we have the expertise to deliver complete solutions that answer the needs of these users,” says Peter Kjellberg, CMO & Head of Other Global Verticals at Dometic.
Those interested in learning more about how to secure the Ösa and incorporate The Dometic Food Delivery Box into their company’s last-mile food delivery operation are encouraged to contact mihai@ridecake.com to learn more. Additional in-depth info, a walkthrough presentation, and imagery are available at ridecake.com/en/ces and ridecake.com/en/cake-x-dometic.
