- TME outperformed the overall European automotive market with total vehicle sales of 1,080,975

- Toyota brand consolidates its 2nd place as best-selling passenger car brand in Europe for a second year running

- Strong customer demand for Toyota and Lexus’ multi-technology line-up sees electrified vehicle sales climb by +14% year-on-year to 718,608 units

Toyota Motor Europe’s(1) (TME) sales increased in 2022 to 1,080,975 Toyota and Lexus vehicles whilst the total European automotive market fell by -11% year-on-year. In the same period, TME’s market share increased to a record 7.3%, gaining +0.9% points versus 2021.

Toyota also consolidated its position as the 2nd best-selling passenger car brand in Europe.  A key factor in TME’s performance was the continued high customer demand for its attractive electrified vehicle line-up which includes battery electric, fuel cell, plug-in hybrid and hybrid powertrains. TME’s overall sales of electrified vehicles, grew by +14% year-on-year to 718,608, which now represents 66% of its total sales mix and 74% in West Europe.

“    We are pleased with another year of strong sales performance, continuing to outperform the market, despite some very challenging conditions in Europe. We’ve experienced buoyant demand for new models such as Yaris Cross and Aygo X, and sales remained high for other established models.

Looking forward to 2023, I expect to see further volume and market share growth as we further expand our multi-technology, electrified line-up. For Toyota, we will benefit from our first full year of bZ4X and Corolla Cross sales. And, for Lexus, we expect some relief from last year’s supply restrictions plus a further boost from the launches of new Lexus RX and the all-new electric Lexus RZ.

Together with other new zero and low-CO2  products in the pipeline we will progressively move towards our carbon neutrality goals while meeting EU and UK emissions targets(2)

Matt Harrison, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe„

In December, at its annual Kenshiki event, Toyota and Lexus presented several new models which will further expand its multi-technology line-up in 2023. Building on its previous 2035 commitment for 100% CO2  reduction in all new vehicles within the EU region, TME announced the goal to achieve full carbon neutrality in all operations by latest 2040.

Brands and model performance

Toyota sold 1,030,508 vehicles in 2022, an increase of +3% year-on-year. The brand’s top sellers were Corolla, Yaris, Yaris Cross, RAV4 and C-HR accounting for 74% of total volume.

New model launches in this period including the all new Aygo X, Corolla Cross hybrid and the bZ4X battery electric SUV  boosted overall customer demand. Toyota’s overall electrified mix expanded by +16% year-on-year with 677,823 vehicles sold, representing a 65% share of the brand’s total sales.

Lexus sold 50,467 vehicles in the same period, with an overall electrified mix at 81% of total brand sales. The brands’ extensive SUV line-up of RX,NX,UX,GX and LX  represented 89% of total sales.

While 2022 was disrupted by supply chain issues and the suspension of exports to Russia, the outlook for 2023 is much brighter with the introduction of new generation RX this month, which includes three different electrified powertrains, the RX 350h hybrid, RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid and the first ever RX 500h turbo hybrid.

Later, in the spring, Lexus will start deliveries of its first battery electric vehicle on a dedicated platform, the RZ 450e.
