BIKES First news from stage 8

13.01.2014: Start 07:00 Connection 24km Special stage 462km from start 84

Start    07:00
Connection  24km
Special stage    462km
from start    84

09:17 Bikes: Van Niekerk second quickest at CP1!

The South African biker has just reached CP1 after 140 km and only trails stage leader Cyril Despres by 48', now that the leaders are resuming the special stage after refuelling.

09:14 Bikes: Rodrigues loses the lead at CP1

Portugal’s Helder Rodrigues, in the lead from the start, has lost ground at the last time check point and now lies in third, 2’40' behind Cyril Despres. Jeremias Israel Esquerre is fifth, 4’09' behind the Frenchman, but in front of Juan Pedrero Garcia, 5’14' behind the current stage leader.

09:04 Bikes: The first bikes reach CP1

The leaders in the pack of bikes are refuelling on reaching CP1 after 140 km. The stager hierarchy is in the following order:

Cyril Despres with a total time of 1:35’58', 55” ahead of Joan Barreda and 2’48” in front of Marc Coma, but this places are of course very provisonal.

08:56 Bikes: Duclos on the move again

The French Sherco rider has resumed racing on the special stage, but he has lost at least fifteen minutes due to his stop for technical problems.

08:40 Bikes: Van Niekerk quicker and quicker after 81 km

The South African biker is fourth after 81 km, 2’01' behind the leader. He is fighting for a place on the virtual podium with Joan Barreda and Olivier Pain.

08:37 Bikes: Rodrigues still in front after 81 km

Helder Rodrigues is still the quickest rider on the tracks after 81 km with a time of 51’26', leading Cyril Despres by 1’02' aswell as Joan Barreda by 1’42'. Olivier Pain is still with the pace 2’16' behind in fourth place, ahead of Jeremias Israel Esquerre, 2’34' behind the stage leader.

Marc Coma now finds himself in sixth place, 2’04' behind Rodrigues, but ahead of Juan Pedrero Garcia, who is 3’36' behind the quickest man so far, and the Suzuki of Mario Patrao, 4’08' behind the stage leader.

08:31 Bikes: Duclos at a standstill after 51 km

The French Sherco rider seems to have broken down and has been at a standstill for more than 5 minutes on the side of the tracks. He is attempting to make repairs.

08:21 Bikes: OIivier Pain in the reckoning after 50 km

Frenchman Olivier Pain (Yamaha) is now third in the provisional standings for the special, 25” behind the current leader Helder Rodrigues.

08:19 Bikes: Rodrigues first after 50 km

Portuguese rider Helder Rodrigues (Honda) has just climbed in to first place on the special with a time of 31’21' leading Marc Coma by 8 seconds.

08:10 Bikes: The state of play after 50 km

With a time of 31’29' over the first 50 km, Marc Coma (KTM) leads Cyril Despres (Yamaha) by 49' and Joan Barreda (Honda) by 51'. Provisional fourth place is occupied by Juan Pedrero Garcia (Sherco), 1’29' behind the current leader.

07:47 Bikes: Beyond the top 10

Another hot point in the standings is between thirteenth and sixteenth position, with a gap of only 18 minutes between Riaan Van Niekerk, Michael Metge, Ivan Jakes and Bolivian Juan Carlos Salvatierra. Within this quartet lies one of the smallest gaps in the rally: 20 seconds separate Metge and Jakes in the fight for 14th place!

        07:44 Bikes: Around tenth place

There is plenty of competition in the hour that separates eighth rider Helder Rodrigues and twelth placed Stefan Svitko. Between the two men, David Casteu (KTM) , Cyril Despres (Yamaha) and Daniel Gouet (Honda) are separated by only 4 minutes! The day’s long special is likely to see a change in this situation

07:42 Bikes: “First bike away on time…”

This is how the organisation team posted at the start of the special announced the departure of Joan Barreda Bort at 7.15 AM local time. The Spaniard kicked off proceedings in the bike race ahead of Marc Coma and Cyril Despres. On front of him lies 462 kilometres around the salt pans of Uyuni before heading for Calama in Chile.

07:38 Bikes: A short delay of 15 minutes

Due to the presence of low cloud on the bike and quad special, the start was delayed by 15 minutes, to enable the deployment of airborne security measures.

07:32 Bikes: The bikes are on their way

Since 6.00 AM the bikes and quads have been on the link stage leading them to the small town of Colchani, near to the start of the special. The bikes and quads will take a different route for the special to the cars and trucks today. 84 bikes and 17 quads were cleared to race this Monday and will re-join the rest of the rally at the bivouac in Calama this evening.

-4:22 Bikes: Stage 8: destination Calama

On the edge of the largest salt flat in the world, the motorcycle and quad riders will skirt the Salar de Uyuni in a 462 km special consisting mainly of earth and stony terrain. At the end of a long 522 km liaison on a different course, the cars and trucks will cross the border with Chile during a 302 km special.

The 2014 will enter its third country on Monday. With almost 3,000 km to go until the end of the rally and everything still up in the air, the overall leaders will be in for another day of defensive racing.
