Dakar Rally 2014 Stage 7
Salta to Salta Uyuni
January 12th, 2014

12:51 Cars: Km 226: Sainz forges ahead inch by inch

At the wheel of his SMG buggy, Carlos Sainz has extended his lead to 2'00' over Nasser Al-Attiyah's Mini and 2'19' on Nani Roma's. The Spaniard now has a margin of 2'51' over fourth-placed Stéphane Peterhansel.

Hołowczyc has moved ahead of Terranova and now sits in fifth place. De Villiers continues to lose ground, 7'33' back.

12:18 Cars: Km 139: Sainz still in control

The narrow gaps are getting a bit wider. 1 h 26' into today's special, Spain's Carlos Sainz (SMG buggy) holds a slim 49' lead over Nani Roma (Mini).

Nasser Al-Attiyah (+1'00') is in third place, with Stéphane Peterhansel 4' behind him. Orlando Terranova (+2'32') and Giniel de Villiers (+5'37') are fifth and sixth, respectively.

11:44 Cars: Km 107: Sainz goes through CP1

Spaniard Carlos Sainz leads after 107 kilometres. His time of 1 h 04'36' was 26' faster than Nani Roma's, 51' than Stéphane Peterhansel's, 54' than Al-Attiyah's and 2'02' than Orlando Terranova's. Giniel de Villiers sits in sixth place, 4'34' behind the leader.

11:31 Cars: Just 2 seconds between Al-Attiyah and Peter!

Mini's Qatari driver is just two seconds ahead of Stéphane Peterhansel. Sainz is third at 18', with Nani Roma fourth at 49'. Fifth-placed Hołowzycz (+1'03') is ahead of Giniel de Villiers (+1'47') and Orlando Terranova (+2'12').

10:56 Cars: And the production cars?

Category T2 is for production series cars which have undergone minimal changes. Japanese Jun Mitsuhashi and his Toyota Landcruiser lead the classification and sit 22nd overall. Next up are his teammate Nicolas Gibon (31st overall) and Kazakh Denis Berezovskiy's Nissan Patrol (40th overall).

    10:43 Cars: Racing solo

Some drivers prefer to go it alone. Former motorcycle rider Eric Bernard and his Nissan Trio buggy are the fastest among drivers without navigators, sitting in 23rd overall, 6 h 19' down.

He is far ahead of Tom Coronel's twin brother Tim, at the wheel of a Suzuki Swift buggy. The Dutchman is 44th, 12 h 19' down. Finally, Polaris team leader William Alcaraz lies 50th, 14 h 05' down.

10:33 Cars: How are the ladies doing?

There are two women behind the wheel this year. Isabelle Patissier and her old but spruced-up SMG buggy sit in 43rd place in the provisional car classification, 55'12' behind the leader.

Argentina's Alicia Reina and her Toyota SRV are in 71st place, 2 h 02' down. With just 82 cars at the start of today's stage, the two ladies are still hanging tough

10:19 Cars: Peterhansel hits the road!

And the clock is ticking for the winner of the day before yesterday's special! Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel is leading the charge after starting at 10:10 am local time. Nasser Al-Attiyah, Orlando Terranova and Giniel de Villiers are hot on his heels.

10:01 Cars: Stage to start at 10 am local time

The car and truck crews will set off from near Las Cuevas at 10 am local time for a 533 km special. The safety helicopters are currently moving into position.

09:27 Cars and trucks will have to wait

The start of today's special, originally scheduled for 9:15 am local time, has been delayed for at least 30 minutes for the same reason: the helicopters cannot fly with such low clouds.

08:13 Cars: Cars and trucks underway

The cars and trucks left the bivouac a bit later to tackle a shorter (114 km) link section, making their way towards the start of this single-section 533 km special in Las Cuevas. The crews will be back in the Salta bivouac this evening. There were 82 cars and 54 trucks left in the race this morning.

    08:01 : Stage 7: Salta–Salta or Salta–Uyuni?

The motorcycles and quads will not be racing on the same course as the cars and trucks today. The riders will tackle another marathon stage which will take them to the Salar de Uyuni as the Dakar sets foot in Bolivia for the first time. Before the salt flat will come a tricky mountain labyrinth in which the slightest mistake will carry a hefty price tag.

The drivers, on the other hand, will tackle a 500 km timed loop with a variety of speeds and landscapes, including long stretches of high-altitude, high-speed racing.
