15.01.2014: Dakar Rally 2014 Stage 10 Iquique - Antofastga 10:33 Bikes: Finish 1: Barreda on top

Dakar Rally 2014 Stage 10
Iquique - Antofastga

10:33 Bikes: Finish 1: Barreda on top

With a time of 2 h 38'15', Joan Barreda has just finished the first part of today's special with 5'28' over Hélder Rodrigues. Cyril Despres, in the provisional third place, was 6'29' slower. Marc Coma managed his overall lead, finishing 9'41' down.

10:15 Bikes: Km 169: Pain on the virtual podium

Olivier Pain is now sitting in third place, 4'31' back, behind leader Joan Barreda and Hélder Rodrigues, 3'44' back. Next come Javier Pizzolito (+5'05'), Kuba Przygonski (+5'41'), Cyril Despres (+5'50') and Juan Carlos Salvatiera, who has lost time and currently stands seventh, 6'14' down. Marc Coma (+8'24') is ninth.

09:54 Bikes: Km 11: Barreda still in command at CP2

With Jeremías Israel Esquerre gone, Hélder Rodrigues is now running in second, 3'18' behind Joan Barreda Bort. Together with Javier Pizzolito, third at 3'55', this means Honda is hogging the top 3.

Behind them, Salvatierra (+3'58') and his Speedbrain sit in fourth place, ahead of Olivier Pain (+4'05') and Kuba Przygoński (+4'22'). Cyril Despres (+5'12') is seventh and Marc Coma (+7'26') is ninth.

09:46 Bikes: End of the road for Esquerre

Chile's Jeremías Israel Esquerre crashed out of the Dakar following an incident with a local vehicle at km 114 of today's special. It looks like spectators moving around the desert in their car hit the rider.

Fortunately, his injuries are not too serious and he received medical attention straight away.

09:23 Bikes: Barreda leads at km 106

Joan Barreda is now in control of the motorcycle special, with 2'01' on Jeremías Israel Esquerre and 2'44' on Hélder Rodrigues. Javier Pozzolito (+3'02') sits in fourth place, ahead of Olivier Pain (+3'29') and Cyril Despres (+4'47').

    09:14 Bikes: Przygoński‎ gaining ground

Kuba Przygoński‎ has come back to within 41' of Cyril Despres. Apart from a couple of riders, all the guys at the front of today's special are directly concerned by Cyril Despres' attempt to move back up the overall. The fight for third and fourth is on!

09:11 Bikes: Km 71: Pushing from behind

Cyril Despres' early attack made several riders nervous and we are now seeing a response: Hélder Rodrigues leads the scratch, 21' ahead of Jeremías Israel Esquerre and Bolivia's Salvatierra.

Javier Pizzolito is fourth, 32' down, with Olivier Pain a further 12' back.

    08:50 Bikes: Gouet gets going

Chile's Daniel Gouet is back on his way after a quick stop on the dunes. He seems to have lost about 4 minutes.

08:49 Bikes: Rodrigues leads at km 71

The Portuguese rider now has a lead of 59' over Cyril Despres and 3'03' over Marc Coma. Hélder Rodrigues is striving to defend his sixth place against Cyril Despres' comeback.

08:45 Bikes: Km 71: Coma and Despres riding together

71 km into today's special, the two riders triggered the timing beacon one after the other, at almost the exact same time. Despres posted a time of 1 h 03'10' for the first 71 km.

08:38 Bikes: Gouet stops at km 48

The Chilean who posted the second best time at the previous checkpoint has come to a halt in a field of dunes just before km 50 of today's special. He's lost almost 5 minutes so far.

08:31 Bikes: Gouet second at km 33

Chile's Daniel Gouet clocked the second best time, 48' behind Cyril Despres. Joan Barreda Bort (+1'15') is fourth, ahead of Jeremías Israel Esquerre (+1'19'). Olivier Pain (+1'37') is sixth. Kuba Przygoński‎ is losing 3 minutes to Despres.

08:16 Bikes: Despres leads at km 33

The Frenchman has seized the reins of the stage with a time of 26'02', enough to beat Hélder Rodrigues and his Honda by 1'10'.

Jordi Viladoms (+1'45') sits in third place, followed by Marc Coma (+2'08'). Juan Pedrero García and Štefan Svitko have conceded 3'20' and 4'01' so far, respectively.

07:49 Bikes: Keeping an eye on… the fight for fifth

Olivier Pain currently sits in fifth, 2 h 16'27' behind the leader. However, many other riders would like to take his place: Hélder Rodrigues is within striking distance, with just under 12 minutes to make up on Pain.

Things get even tighter behind him, promising an interesting battle. Kuba Przygoński‎ is just one minute further behind, with eighth-placed Cyril Despres hot on his heels less than 5 minutes behind.

07:41 Bikes: Coma in the special

The leader of the rally, Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM), blasted into today's 631 km special at 7:25 am local time. The first timed section is 231 km long. Riders will then have to tackle a 185 neutralised sector before hitting the second timed section, which is 215 km long.

07:11 Bikes: Motorcycles and quads in the link section

82 motorcycles and 17 quads were greenlighted to start the tenth stage of the 2014 Dakar. The first riders are now in the 53 km liaison that kicks off today's stage.

Yesterday's winner and overall leader Marc Coma is leading the way ahead of Cyril Despres and Juan Pedrero García, while Joan Barreda Bort will start later after being handed down a 15-minute penalty yesterday for speeding in a controlled area.
