RENAULT SPORT TROPHY

After taking the Endurance title on Saturday, Dario Capitanio and David Fumanelli (Oregon Team) flew the Oregon Team flag high during the Renault Sport Trophy Sprint races. Dario Capitanio took the win in Prestige to clinch the title and claim his prize of a seat in the 2016 24-Hours of Le Mans in an LM P2 car.

His team mate David Fumanelli then triumphed in Sprint Elite in front of Nicky Pastorelli (V8 Racing) and Pieter Schothorst (Equipe Verschuur). Fourth place finisher, Andrea Pizzitola (ART Junior Team) now leads the general classification ahead of the season finale at Jerez.

Prestige: two titles in two days for Capitanio

The pole winner Richard Gonda (ART Junior Team) was overtaken by Dario Capitanio at the start of the Prestige race. Behind the two leaders, Diederik Sijthoff (V8 Racing) went from sixth to fourth, passing Max Braams (V8 Racing) and Max van Splunteren (Equipe Verschuur) ,who then went off the track on lap two, while Max Braams got around Diederik Sijthoff.

Despite pressure from Richard Gonda, Dario Capitanio held on for the win in Prestige. Max Braams finished third as well as putting in the fastest lap of the race. Diederik Sijthoff was next after pulling away in the final laps from the group including Niccolò Nalio (Oregon Team), Max van Splunteren and Jelle Beelen (V8 Racing).

Antoine Boulay (Monlau Competicion) finished eighth, ahead of Andrés Mendez (Zele Racing) and Jeroen Schothorst (Equipe Verschuur), who overtook Adalberto Baptista (Oregon Team) for tenth place on the last lap.

Elite: Fumanelli completes the Oregon triumph

At the start, David Fumanelli held on to the lead ahead of Nicky Pastorelli, who got the better of Steijn Schothorst (Equipe Verschuur). Pieter Schothorst and Bas Schothorst (Zele Racing) followed the trio at the end of a first lap where the safety car was deployed following the accident of Roy Geerts (V8 Racing). The positions remained unchanged and the group field took off.

David Fumanelli gradually pulled away and went on to victory ahead of Nicky Pastorelli and Pieter Schothorst, promoted to third place after the problem of Steijn Schothorst on lap 11. Andrea Pizzitola (ART Junior Team) was fourth ahead of Luciano Bacheta (Oregon Team) and Christian Klien (Zele Racing). Bas Schothorst, Alan Hellmeister (Oregon Team), Vincent Capillaire (Monlau Competicion) and Duncan Huisman (V8 Racing) completed the top ten.

Quotes

Dario Capitanio:
“Richard was really quick. He was an excellent adversary, always clean sometimes faster than me, but he was unlucky during the season. Yesterday, the title came late in the evening, but David and I were happy. Today, despite the attacks from Richard, I was successful in managing my race.

To win the championship with one race remaining is great. I am in seventh heaven. With the victory and title at Le Mans, I will race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans next June thanks to Renault!”

David Fumanelli:
“It’s a great feeling to win after our title yesterday with Dario. It was a weekend full of emotions and a perfect day for the team. You have to work to achieve such a result because I had never been to Le Mans before this weekend.

The car was fantastic and I was even a little lucky because Steijn’s retirement allowed me to pick up some extra points. T will be hard, but I am going to give everything I’ve got.”
