Schiller and Korjus, take Sprint wins at Motorland Aragón

17.04.2016: Fabian Schiller (Team Marc VDS EG 0,0 #9) and Kevin Korjus (R-ace GP #3) won

Fabian Schiller (Team Marc VDS EG 0,0 #9) and Kevin Korjus (R-ace GP #3) won their respective Sprint races in the Renault Sport Trophy at Motorland Aragón.

In the morning, the German driver took the reins of the AM category ahead of team mate Fran Rueda (Team Marc VDS EG 0,0 #15) and Miguel Ramos (Equipe Verschuur #19).

In the PRO division, the 2010 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 champion won ahead of Lewis Williamson (Strakka Racing #42), who holds on to the lead in the general classification and Markus Palttala (Team Marc VDS EG 0,0 #9).

Schiller makes it two wins with Team Marc VDS EG 0,0

On Saturday morning, Fabian Schiller won the pole ahead of his team mate Fran Rueda and Fredrik Blomstedt (R-ace GP #3), who was startled at the start before Max Braams (V8 Racing #8) went straight at the hairpin.

Further back in the field, Tim Sugden (Strakka Racing #42) spun after an incident with Ash Hand (Oregon Team #5), who was then penalized.

Davide Roda (Oregon Team #1), Toni Forné (R-ace GP #2) and Jeroen Schothorst (Equipe Verschuur #21) all retired.

The two Team Marc VDS EG 0,0 Renault Sport R.S. 01s pulled away, while Fredrik Blomstedt had to return to the pits on lap four. Miguel Ramos inherited his spot before having to contend with the V8 Racing duo of Jelle Beelen (V8 Racing #7) and Max Braams.

Fabian Schiller and Fran Rueda made it a one-two team finish with a 15 second gap to Miguel Ramos, who managed to fend off Max Braams.

Jelle Beelen took fifth place ahead of Tim Sugden, who came back up the order after being last at the first corner.

Andres Mendez (Oregon Team #4), Carmen Jorda (V8 Racing #6), Ash Hand et Dennis Andersen (High Class Racing #11) complete the list of points scorers.

Korjus makes the difference at the start

The day before, Lewis Williamson had taken the pole and started ahead of Pieter Schothorst (Equipe Verschuur #21) and Kevin Korjus.

The make-up of the race changed at turn one with Kevin Korjus moving into the lead in front of Lewis Williamson and Markus Palttala (Team Marc VDS EG 0,0).

Behind them, Pieter Schothorst dropped down the order while Raoul Owens (R-ace GP #2) and Anders Fjordbach (High Class Racing #11) had to make a trip to the pits. It was a premature end of the race for Dario Capitanio (Oregon Team #1)

While the gaps remained small and stable at the front, the fight was on for sixth place. Bruno Bonifacio (Oregon Team #4) held off Nicky Pastorelli (V8 Racing #7), who was then surprised by Jordan Grogor (V8 Racing #6. The Brazilian driver then suffered a puncture that relegated to the tail end of the field.

Kevin Korjus went on for the victory, followed by Lewis Williamson and Markus Palttala, who were never more than two seconds behind the Estonian.

Roy Geerts (Equipe Verschuur #19) finished just off the podium in fourth. David Fumanelli (Oregon Team #5) and Jordan Grogor were next in fifth and sixth.

After starting the race from pit lane Meindert van Buuren (V8 Racing #8) took seventh ahead of Nicky Pastorelli, Tanart Sathienthirakul (Team Marc VDS EG 0,0) and the final point scorer, Pieter Schothorst.

Fabian Schiller:
“After the excellent work done yesterday by the team; we put it all together today. The Renault Sport R.S. 01 was really easy to drive.

I could look after the tyres all throughout the race, while keeping Fran behind me. We have made a good start in the category and I am very happy.”

Kevin Korjus
: “It is great to be back in the Renault family after such a long time. After my blunder yesterday at turn one, the only thing I was thinking about at the start was not to over-shoot the braking point.

I absolutely wanted to brake at the right time! I was able to build up a small lead, but Lewis was very fast and I made a few mistakes. In the end, it was a race where we all attacked as much as we could!”
