Recently motorsport fans were provided with the opportunity to not only watch the only live motorsport racing series taking place locally at the moment but also to compete in the event themselves. With the qualifying sessions started on 9 April 2020 and the grand final concluding the event on 15 April 2020, the local live racing event entertained thousands of spectators as the Solidarity e-Race team recorded 15 000 views on the live stream feeds.
The event that was created to provide both live interactive entertainment and support to the Solidarity Fund proved to be a hit with local motoring enthusiasts with the Facebook page recording a reach of 356 791 people and inspiring 52 971 post engagements. The website was also abuzz with more than 2500 unique visitors logging on to get the latest results and confirming the times for the next session.
Furthermore, the organisers managed to raise more than R20 000 which was donated to the Solidarity Fund and its efforts to alleviate the pressures experienced by local businesses due to the lockdown. The live sporting event and its prizes which consisted of over R60 000 in cash and prizes grabbed the attention of a variety of South African citizens as the 137 registered participants included both real-world racers and SIM racers.
"It's amazing how awesome the first live motorsport event played out and how much interest it has generated amongst the racing and gaming fraternity. It even drew on the attention of the management of Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit who contacted me to see how they can get involved. While sadly we are unable to host the event on the modernized circuit again, their interest shows you once again the power of Social Media when hosting an event of this nature," Greg Moloney, NEC Solidarity e-Race commentator, The Voice Of Choice.
With the first live sporting event having attained so much popularity and success in its core goals, the event sponsors and organisers have come together to reboot the NEC Solidarity e-Race once more due to popular demand. The NEC Solidarity e-Race, sponsored by Data Sciences Corporation, Pure Storage, Afrihost and True Race, promises to bring back all the action-packed racing although in a new and exciting format.
The live motorsport event will kick off on Thursday, 23 April with the hot lap qualifying sessions remaining open until 08h00 on Monday, 27 April. The semi-finals will take place from 18h30 on Tuesday, 28 April and will once again be streamed live on both the NEC Solidarity e-Race YouTube and Facebook pages. The grand final will take place on Wednesday 29 April where spectators can watch the live stream from 18h30.
