Marco Butti and Simone Patrinicola fine tuned the art of comeback at Monza Italian GT opener, both in the dry and wet

25.04.2022: • The young drivers debut on the Audi R8 LMS highlighted by comeback races from last row in both rounds and capped with maiden GT3 Am class win as well as first Top10 finish yesterday

• The young drivers debut on the Audi R8 LMS highlighted by comeback races from last row in both rounds and capped with maiden GT3 Am class win as well as first Top10 finish yesterday

After being forced to skip both qualifying sessions due to a clutch failure, Marco Butti and Simone Patrinicola knew they were in for a grind at the historic venue, as both drivers faced starting from the last row in a 40-car field.

On top of that, the season opener on Saturday afternoon was met by rain and the season started after two laps behind safety car. They succeeded in fine tuning their skills in dodging the perils of comebacks and on Saturday on a rain-soaked track moved up from last to 16th overall and yesterday afternoon made it two in a row improving their score as the No.1 Audi recovered from last to eighth overall with a class victory in GT3 Am.

Definitely nice memories to store for the 17-year old Butti and team mate Patrinicola that as 28-year old can hardly be called a consumed sportscars driver: for both this was the first time they tried their hands on a GT3 car. On Saturday the steady rain forced Patrinicola to start for two laps behind the safety car, which trimmed the avalaible time to overcome the field of slower GT Cup cars.

Nonetheless he had recovered to third in GT3 Am class and midway through the field when he relinquished the car to Butti. The rookie driving at his home circuit snatched another couple of overall spots as well as the runner up place in class, but time expired before he could mount a challenge to the class winning Ferrari.

After the rain on Saturday, the stint of the Sicilian born driver was up for a dry track, as Patrinicola at the end of the opening lap had already moved up to P28. Another couple of laps and Patrinicola was 22nd and third in class.

But as mid-race was nearing two safety cars and a full course yellow period bunched up the field and mixed the cards, as the Sicilian climbed to sixteenth overall, greatly reducing the gap from the overall leader as well as from the NSX GT3 EVO then leading the GT3 Am class.

At the first restart an accident took away the Japanese car and as Butti took the R8 LMS over from the team mate the young Como Lake-based driver claimed the top class spot from Alessandro Cozzi's Ferrari, getting closer to the overal Top10 spots in the process.

As the chequered flag was around the corner Butti overtook the Mercedes AMG of Pro duo Pesce/Rappange, claiming a final P8 overall that taking into account the start from row 20 capped a successful first Italian GT3 Sprint meeting.
