Campos Racing and their drivers experienced a terrible luck at Monza, which hosted the penultimate round of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship season in the frame of the Italian F1 Grand Prix. Ralph Boschung and Olli Caldwell failed to finish both races as they got caught in racing incidents. It wasn’t the expected weekend after very positive results at the past events but motorsport sometimes works like that.



Boschung proved his stunning place on Friday during the free practice session held in the morning. The Swiss driver scored the second-fastest time on the timesheets with a lap of 1m32.650s, which meant excellent prospects ahead of qualifying. Briton Caldwell put together a lap of 1m34.019s but focusing on long stints and race pace exclusively and not making qualifying attempts.



Later in qualifying, the session was interrupted by a heavy crash when Ayumu Iwasa ran wide at Parabolica and crashed into the barriers. It was a difficult season due to that red flag and traffic with all the drivers trying to find another car to tow. At the end, Boschung completed a best lap of 1m32.352s, which left 13th on the grid, and Caldwell’s best time was a lap of 1m33.195s to start from 20th.



Saturday’s race 1, consisting of 21 laps, would be a real challenge for both Campos Racing drivers. Caldwell’s race didn’t go any further than lap 1 when Tatiana Calderón crashed into him. After the safety car period, the race was restarted on lap 4. Boschung was trying to make his way through the field when he made contact with Clement Novalak at 2º Variante on lap 8. Despite Boschung could make it to pits, his car sustained front suspension damage.



Their fortunate didn’t change for Sunday’s feature race. When the lights went out, Boschung – who had made a good start– was forced wide to avoid a collision at T1. When the Swiss racer was coming back on track, Theo Pourchaire hit Boschung’s car. It set off a chain-reaction crash as Boschung was sent into the barriers and Pourchaire was collected by Caldwell and Luca Ghiotto. All the four cars were forced to retire.

Campos Racing will continue working for the season finale, which is scheduled at the Yas Marina Circuit on 18-20 November.
