Meritus driver Rio Tames wet weather for victory in Sepang

FORMULA BMW PACIFIC

Rio Haryanto dominated the second race of the new Formula BMW Pacific to clinch his first ever victory in the series at Sepang International Circuit today.

Driving for Malaysian team Meritus Racing, the 16-year-old Indonesian won by more than four seconds in a race which was delayed by nearly an hour due to torrential rain that fell before the start of the GP2 Asia Series two hours earlier.

Despite the setback, Rio drove like a seasoned professioanl  to take the chequered flag in 11:27.458s. Chris Wootton of Eurasia Motorsport was second in 11:31.488s while Team E-Rain’s Gary Thompson was third in 11:31.584s. It was unbelievable to have such a big gap in the race as I started from sixth position. I would like to thank all the engineers and crew for doing a great job,” said a delighted Rio. The win today has given me a much needed confidence boost and I look forward to the second round, which will also be held in Sepang next month.”

Rio’s teammate, Dustin Sofyan, retired in the first lap after going airborne when he crashed into another car. Neither driver was hurt. “It was a frightening experience but thankfully no one got hurt,” said Dustin. “This part of racing but I hope never to experience anything like it again.”

Team manager Firhat Mokzhani was delighted to be back on winning ways after Rio and Dustin finished third and fifth in the season opener yesterday.

“We knew the cars had the potential to go faster but to win by such a large margin is fantastic,” said Firhat, who has guided Meritus to the last six Formula BMW team championships. “We are back to our winning ways and long may it continue.”
