GP Lommel is here: Bax-Cermak take thin Red Plate to Lommel for round three

23.06.2022: Etienne Bax and Ondrej Cermak will be defending a slender three-point series lead in the deep sand of the famous Lommel circuit over the weekend of 25-26 June.

Etienne Bax and Ondrej Cermak will be defending a slender three-point series lead in the deep sand of the famous Lommel circuit over the weekend of 25-26 June.

The Lommel track is almost in Bax’s back garden, as the Dutchman lives very close to the border. He is familiar with the sandy going, but the same cannot be said of his Czech passenger. Both are coming to terms with the new Husqvarna four-stroke which developed a niggling electronic problem in the previous Loket round.

They will be hoping that glitch is resolved as they take a tiny advantage to Belgium with Kert Varik and Lari Kunnas breathing down their necks. The Estonian/Finnish pairing are enjoying the best start ever to an international season and will be keen to maintain that momentum.

Third place in the table is occupied by another sand specialist Gert van Werven. He has profited immensely from having Ben Van Den Bogaart alongside and demonstrates a new level of speed and confidence.

Loket saw two different race winners in Koen Hermans/Nicolas Musset and Julian Veldman/Glenn Janssens. The latter crew moved into fourth place in the standings just one point behind compatriot Van Werven. Veldman’s early season form has been phenomenal at home, so expect him to be on top form in more deep sand. Hermans/Musset are playing catch-up, but Loket put their title hopes back on track with something now to fight for.

Another new crew enjoying early success comes in the shape of Britons Brett Wilkinson and Joe Millard. They go to Belgium in fifth place but only nineteen points off the red plate holders. This new pairing has come together well and are in a strong frame of mind to support what they have already achieved at home and abroad.

Justin Keuben/Johnny Badaire have a two-point edge over Hermans, with an exciting French duo next up. Two brilliant rides in Loket saw Killian and Evan Prunier mixing it with the best, coming away with a forty-one-point total, dead level with Marco Heinzer/Reudi Betschart from Switzerland. They are doing a great job for the nation which once ruled this sport.

A disastrous start to the 2022 season finds former champions Marvin Vanluchene/Robbie Bax trailing in eleventh, one place behind Stuart Brown/Josh Chamberlain.

Having said that, both crews are less than forty points adrift of the red plate. In this topsy-turvy sport, with four rounds, eight races remaining and two hundred points still up for grabs, any one of these teams can steal the glory. This might be a shorter season, but it is all to play for.

Join us in Lommel June 25-26 and if you can’t, then keep up with the news as it happens on WSC Facebook, Instagram and www.fimsidecarcross.com
