2007 Asian Formula Renault Challenge Zhuhai International Circuit China
Malaysia's promising young driver, Nik Iruwan completed successfully two days of test with championship winning Asia Racing Team (ART) Motorsports at the Zhuhai International Circuit. The team was immediately impressed by the driver feedback and performance, and is looking forward for more outings with the Malaysian in view of racing in the 2008 Asian Formula Renault Challenge.
Nik Iruwan completed over hundred laps in the two days of test under cool and dry conditions. He began by learning the circuit and car, as both are new to him, but was immediately on the pace after two sessions and setting competitive times at the challenging Chinese circuits. Since the beginning Nik and ART Motorsports created a good 'symbios' between each other and they hope this will be the key to a successful 2008 season.
"Firstly, I haven't been driving since my last race in September at Croft. I felt at home right from the day I arrived at the team. Even though I had to adjust to a new car, I felt comfortable driving and the team helped me a lot to get to where I was in the end. The test today is very encouraging and I enjoy working with the team", said the University of Hertfordshire racing driver graduate.
Nik also believes Asia Racing Team (ART) Motorsports has the tool to make him one of the past winners, "I like the way Philippe work and approach to my driving. I know ART will mould me into a winner and that's why I'm here.
It will be tough. It has been different since the previous years as there are a lot more European drivers in the series now. They have been dominating the championship for the last two years. The Asian Category is my primary target but I'm not ruling out on the overall title. I just need to have the right package to do this".
Speaking about the test ART Motorsports Team Manager, Philippe Descombes said: "The test-day went quite well for Nick as he performed solidly over the two days. He got used to a track and a car which were new to him.
Despite he has been racing for a while, he doesn't have much track time and has never been taught properly. It's a shame because the talent is there. Now we are really working on his skills and after 4-5 sessions he was on the pace.
I am pleased with the way we ended up. As we expected Nick is definitely a driver with great potential which has been hidden until now. He immediately realizes what is doing wrongly and always changes on the right away. I hope to see him racing for us in 2008
Asian Formula Renault Challenge, and I'm pretty sure he will be a front runner".
